WEEK 7 - 25/08/11 - NERVOUSNESS

"When you suffer an attack of nerves you're being attacked by the nervous system. What chance has a man got against a system?" — Russell Hoban
-    LORENA    -
It ends in capilars thinner than hair, capilars that are individually controllable. But as they get closer to the brain, they get thicker and their sensed feelings become stronger - so strong that before he knew it, it had already taken over the control.
-    DAPHNE    -
the perfect system of dry paper, the tiny fibers holding it all together into a flat untouched shape. papers big enemy is water, it will damage it completely into another shape. the wonderful thing about paper is that after it dries it holds the current state it is in. the system of the fibers stands up to the elements it has to deal with.

WEEK 6 - 18/08/11 - NERVOUSNESS

"Oh the nerves, the nerves; the mysteries of this machine called man! Oh the little that unhinges it, poor creatures that we are!"
—Charles Dickens
-    LORENA    -
Tiny things might alter the nerves of a perfectionist: a spot in a clean floor, a scratch in a smooth surface, a crooked stitch in a beautiful garment, and in this case the sloppy joined edges of a box. Meaningless details outcast the whole, and it might just drive you crazy unless you embrace the singularity of the error and try to enjoy it, maybe like the own human imperfection.
-    DAPHNE    -
the little that is needed to hold it all together, vulnerable but very strong. the knowing that it all can break apart just as easy, nerve wracking.

WEEK 5 - 11/08/11 - NERVOUSNESS

"Being unprepared heightens nerves."            —    James Galway
-    LORENA    -
Being in front of an unknown object without any clue about what it is, or how to use it, may either be an invitation to creativity and amusement, or to anxiety and frustration; it all depends on how you deal with the nerves that come from not knowing how to handle the unexpected or unknown. With this piece I will give you some hints... it's a brooch, you can also can see how it has to be assembled but the thing is: how is it supposed to be worn?
-    DAPHNE    -
being unprepared, makes room for surprises, for things to move in different ways and directions. being unprepared makes room for flexibility, for things/nerves to move up and down. the brooch is connected to the fabric by a safety pin, but it is flexible in all connecting points, which makes it move around freely but also keeps it spaciousness.

WEEK 4 - 04/08/11 - WONDER

"I wonder what ants do on rainy days?     Midori asked."    — Haruki Murakami
-    LORENA    -
I had a hard time this week, I couldn't take this phrase too deeply because ants are the insects I dislike the most, so I just managed to imagine that in rainy days they gather in the "air bags" inside the anthill eating all the sugar they had collected, having a great time, without the queen ant complaining or ordering things... that's why they get so hyperactive when it's about to rain, they're anxious for it to come!
More pics of the process here.
-    DAPHNE    -
what do they do? the only thing i can think of is that they'll wait till the rain is over. which is maybe not such a boring thing to do, cause i think most of their live exists of repetition anyway, doing the same thing over and over again. gathering food, eating food, making babies, gathering some more food, eating some more... so my earring of this week shows the repetition, the same shape over and over again.
